I should have been more clear. I've bled brake and clutch systems numerous times. I do mine with 10 psi pressure from a bicycle pump. I learned that technique from a Saab mechanic years ago. I was wondering more about diagnosis, or more specifically, whether it is feasible that air would have spontaneously gotten into the clutch circuit, such that bleeding it would fix the problem.
The answer is that bleeding it helped a bit, as the clutch is off the floor now, but the clutch is still soft and shifting is still difficult. I'm going to call the Saab dealership that's 140 miles away tomorrow.
While we're on the subject, how many of you have had a failed clutch slave cylinder without it leaking fluid? Mine's not leaking. IRRC, with my 9000 turbos I had one failure that leaked obviously and another that didn't leak at all. And then I had a clutch master failure that didn't leak (those tend to be internal failures of the seals). I run my cars to pretty high mileage, you might have guessed.
