to close off this case, after getting a compatible module i simply disconnected battery, unplugged old faulty module, plugged in new module, connected battery and voila, the car's check system did its thing and the SRS light did not reappear! So problem solved! AND you do NOT need a Tech 2 machine!

by the way the compatible modules for my car seem to be:

4619680 (the oldest version and my failed unit)
5266572 (1998)
5266564.

there's one in my mechanic's 1997 9000 which is 4619672 but i'm not sure that would work on my car.
This was likely the simplest fix anyone ever had for their SRS module light ;)
