I would suggest either rebuilding your turbo or upgrading the compressor wheel with either an 18T or 19T billet wheel. This can be done either sending out your existing turbo to be rebuilt/upgraded (requires alloy cold side housing to be machined out to match upgraded compressor wheel) or you can purchase a matching compressor alloy housing and compressor wheel and a rebuild kit and do it yourself. Its probably better if its sent out: having said that the Mitsubushi turbos do not require balancing if the alignment of the hotside VS cold side are "matched". The TD04 HL15 which comes on our cars is the largest of the TD04 models as far as flow potential although the AR ratio is on the small-ish side. In the past, many people have upgraded to the 9000 aero number 6 cm square turbine housing (ours is 5 cm) for more top end (meaning higher RPM) power. Aftermarket sources for both the 6 cm, 7 cm, and 8 cm hot side housing are available. Please note that larger turbos or hybrid Mitsubushi tubos require changes to software, larger injectors for fuel demand, and a upgraded/higher pressure fuel regulator to avoid TOTAL engine failure. For best practice you should also consider porting the exhaust manifold and installing a 3" downpipe, race cat, KING Cobra intake pipe and 2 1/2" exhaust system. Upgrading a turbo is a deep rabbit hole.

Since I am a do it yourself kind of guy and I don't like the expense of rabbit holes, I purchased a Blackstone abrasive cutting "cone" (about 5" long from Fastenall) for a die grinder removed the turbo manifold on my 9-5 wagon (same turbo as Viggen) and "ported" the TD04 HL15 turbine housing in-situ to match the 9000 aero turbine housing intake side (I had one to compare it with). I also ported the round 9-5 exhaust manifold (same as 9-3) to the newly ported turbine housing (rectangular after porting). This gives "more better response" in the upper RPMs while keeping throttle responce the same at lower RPMs. My 9-5 wagon came with the King Cobra intake which I also ported on the top end. For those who have 9-3s the King Cobra can be retrofited into your car but you must have the newer "short nose" turbo compressor housing or have your existing housing machined. I believe that there is also a way to shorten the existing housing if you have a drill press and are very good with a hacksaw. This would involve drilling five locating holes prior to cutting and shorting the existing housing. I am contemplating doing this to a long nose 19T compressor housing I have so I can, at some point, go down that rabbit hole on my wife's Viggen. All of this porting/NOT changing the compressor wheel can be done with very little expenditure of money and would be a nice bump up in performance while, almost, matching the 9000 aero's 6 square cm housing for sheer I'm outa here right now responce.

To compare and contrast: I have a Viggen with a 19T billet wheel and 8cm square turbine housing, ported upper and lower king cobra intake, 3" downpipe, larger injectors/fuel pressure regulator, no cat, 2 1/2" exhaust and Mike Ds stage 4 tune. To be honest, I have never fully explored the upper range of the throttle travel. There is more lag than my wife"s stock Viggen but gear selection/RPMs pretty much makes this a non issue. I'm in the mountains of western North Carolina so throttle responce is very important. The 19T is OK...I'm thinking the 9-5 wagon is quicker down low but its also an auto box so its not quite an apples to apples thing. If I was going to upgrade, I think a twin scroll turbine housing with a 9cm square AR ratio ( Mitsubushi does not follow industry standard sizing for AR so I am ball parking here) ball bearing (?? big $$) and modify the existing exhaust manifold for twin scroll (or buy tubular = big $$) would be the path forward for me. Unfortunately, Mitsubushi does not make a twin scroll housing for a TD04 so its probably got to be a Garrett GT series or Holset. Having said that I am pretty happy with what I've got. The wife's stock Viggen runs out of steam pretty quickly in the upper RPM range. The modified 9-5 aero (ported exhaust manifold/turbine housing/king cobra) does not. Perhaps someone with a Garrett GT series turbo will chime in here-you can also check out Jonas Kakarkas Designs Youtube channel (Swedish guy speaking English) for turbo upgrades (remember that the 2.3 Viggen motor is the same as the 9-5 engines). Turbos are the same on Viggen and 9-5 Aero models to 2007 (all 9-5 models had Mitsu TD04 turbos after that reguardless of the model AFAIK).There is info within the "performance" part of this forum (unfortunately now closed for posting). Pull a 2006 plus 9-5 short nose turbo with the King Cobra intake, port the turbine housing and go from there. As of this post there is a 2006 9-5 in the Charlotte Pull a Part salvage yard.
