I have heard numerouse systems with Bazooka tubes & I also sold them for 2 years. I DON"T LIKE THEM :o( Their sound is on the mushy side & is not tight & accurate like a properly designed conventional 8, 10 or 12 inch sub/enclosure. The good side is that it's definantly easy to install & is small & compact. Your best bet is to go listen to one in a car like yours (hatchback) & then compare it to a system with a conventional sub.

Depending on what you want to do with the rest of your stereo, add a 4 channel amp 30x4 rms ($100 & up) or more which has a internal x-over. Use 2 channels for the front & bridge the amp for a single sub. If you are concerned with loosing your trunk space, a single 8 or 10 is probably more then enough. There are generic sub enclosures which you could use which should cost $50-75 for a single speaker & $50-$500 for the single sub :o)

Done properly, it can sound great, just visit a few car audio shops & talk to the sales people.

Free-air speakers can sound good IF designed properly. The front & back of the speaker MUST be completely seperated so the sound wave can't come in contact with each other. If it does, the sound can & will cancel out & the frequency response will be drastically reduced. Usually the speakers are mounted on a large board under the rear shelf in a sedan & completely sealed with silicon to ensure the seperation. Tim's setup is probably done in a way that the 4 inch hole in front of the speaker works as the little bit of back pressure to tighten things up like he mentioned.
