Inspection was coming up for my 2002 9-3 SE Convertible and the trunk-mount brake light was only showing one light lit out of four. Did some research on fixing or replacing. Didn't want to shell out $145 so...
Popped the cover off the trunk lid, pulled the light unit (easy peazy). Bus bars and lamp sockets very corroded. Got out the Dremel with a wire wheel and cleaned the bus bars, pulled the lamps out of the sockets and pulled the metal contacts out of the sockets. Cleaned the metal contacts with the Dremel and reinstalled. Replaced the lamps with new just to be sure. Re-installed the whole thing and all 4 lamps worked and no error message on the SID! Two of the sockets in the lamp assembly were broken and the lamps were a bit loose causing some blinking. Used electrical tape to secure (probably be just a temporary fix, but will pass inspection).
~$14.00 for the bulbs and $4.95 for a new Dremel wire wheel is better than $145! and was easy and clean job.
