AC Not Taking Recharge

2000 9-3. I replaced the AC clutch a few years ago, AC has run fine since. I usually have to add a can every few years.
This summer, no AC. I tried to add a can. The gauge on the charger hose reads 0. It will s-l-o-w-l-y take some refrigerant (like 4-5 minutes and get up to around 30 psi, the AC fan comes on, and the pressure drops back down to 0. I've tried two different cans, and for both, after adding for 5-8 minutes, the can still feels like it has quite a bit in it, even though the system pressure always drops back to 0 after the AC fan comes on. I don't have a manifold set, and this will most likely be the last summer with my dear third SAAB. I can't figure out why it the system pressure is really that low and there's charge left in the can, I can't get it to flow into the system. Any ideas?
