You probably have this done by now but I hate to see a question go unanswered or, at least, responded to. I do the AC with the proper equipment so I don't have much experience with the cans. If the system is empty, then air has entered the system in which case it really needs to be evacuated first and drier replaced. The AC clutch won't engage until there's enough refrigerant. When you get enough refrigerant in to engage the compressor, some pressure is built up and then it's probably just leaking out. So my guess is that leak you've had just got worse. If the leak is in one of the tubes, there are repair videos and it looks pretty simple.
