As you've already highlighted, a faulty PCV system can lead to the failure of seals and gaskets and result in oil leaks. Another harmful effect is moisture and an increased risk of sludge build up (definitely not good). To my knowledge the ECU wouldn't be able to compensate for a faulty system.
