Thanks for the ideas. I don't have the aux-in adapter harness so that is not it. I wondered if it could be a glitch in the night panel switch/circuit, but toggling that while the lights were out had no effect and night panel worked again once the dash lights came back on, so.....that seems to be pointing to the SID.

And that is too bad as this SID was originally repaired by BBA Remanufacturing a number of years back (for dropped pixels) and then when it failed again BBA repaired it again under their lifetime warranty on repairs...but that was before they went out of business during the pandemic. The SID is not dropping any pixels, but if that is the control for the dash lights too, then you are right it is likely a cracked solder joint somewhere and so when the SID warms up the connection is made again and the lights come on.
