Just wanted to add to this. I recently had very similar issues (except for the car not running properly part) and my ground point was fine. Upon further investigation I found a broken ground wire in the wiring harness that goes between the trunk and the rest or the car. The break was very close to the trunk end of the harness. My thick ground wire was broken. The thinner ground wire and a white wire were both cracked and on the way to being broken also. I was able to cut out the broken sections and resolder the wires and cover them with heat shrink tubing. Thankfully the harness had enough slack that I was able to slide the repaired wires into the trunk so that they wont be flexed any longer. For me the thing that threw me off the track was the "brake-light failure" message. In the future if I see this message again I will assume it can mean any bulb on the back of the car.
