If you're still able to insert the key to unlock it at the cylinder to open the hatch, consider yourself lucky. Otherwise, you're dropping the back seat and crawling back there to remove hatch liner screws and access the lock to pop it manually.

There's some plastic components on the actuator that connect to metal rods that actuate the lock. Most likely the plastic broke somewhere. I haven't needed to do it for a long time so I don't think it's common but plastic's going to break eventually. Grease it up when you fix it. Good time to make sure there's no rust hiding in there.
