I bought my '95 SE Convertible in the fall.
Here are some answers, from my point of view:
1) Where do you go to get a good book value? NADA? What is the web site?
Edmund's seems to be a bit low and Kelly's seems to be a bit high. I haven't checked NADA, but others on this board say it's close to "just right."
2) What would be some reoccuring problems to look for before I buy?
Most problems with 95's is with the top. There were several recalls on this model. Check Alldata.com for what the recalls were, and check with a Saab dealer to see if yours were done. The biggest problems I've heard about are the 5th bow motor (recall), the tonneau cover motor (not recall) and the glass window leaking or falling out (not recall). Make sure the recalls were done, and that the tonneau cover doesn't ratchet or shudder when raising, and that the rear window is firmly attached. The stitching around the rear window in mine is also coming out, but it doesn't seem to affect how solidly it's in place.
3) Is there a web site for checking recall history or service bullitins? GM has one for all vehicles, does Saab?
Alldata.com for what they were, and the Saab dealer for your car's history. Carfax.com won't tell you about recall history, just info on the title.
4) How can I check to see if this shifter bushing has been fixed or upgrade to the better solution?
Ask Ed G.
5) How can you make sure the idler pulley is not going to sheer? Is there a permanent fix?
Doesn't seem to be, but it's pretty easy (and not too expensive) to replace both pulleys and the belt.
6) Any issues with the convertible top mechanisms?
See above.
7) Any other engine problems to watch for? car only has 43k miles
I also had (previously) a 95 900S coupe, with the same engine. Seems bulletproof.
Overall: the 95 convertibles are more risky than later ones, because top repairs can be extremely (like 1/3 the value of the car?) expensive and it was the first year of that model. Most folks here recommend a 97 or later, but I must be a glutton for punishment!
