I have found that high traction performance tires with wear ratings of 140 to 180 have been very good in the wet. Michelin Pilots, Pirelli P-zeros etc. (These tires can be good for 50000 miles if ones driving habits are not abusive or agressive.)
There are performance tires with high wear ratings, like goodyear eagles which are horrible in the cold and wet.
Tread patterns are important. When getting a high performance tire or ultra performance tire, I think that the tread patterns are designed for wet traction.
I guess my main beef is with high wear rating tires. These can be very dangerous in the wet. Such a tire sold as high performance can be very dangerous for someone who is inclined to drive hard.
