Scott,
I'm certainly no expert here but for what it's worth here's my $0.02.
We own a 95 900S that we purchased new in Dec '94. It was our first SAAB (just leased a 9-5 Wagon -- MUCH nicer car but a significant diff. in $$$!) Anyway the 900 has 120K on the clock and we still really like it. Most of the typical problems that you'll see here were fixed under warranty by the dealer in the first 50K miles. Tonight it is in the shop for a leaking rear engine seal. It doesn't really leak much but it drips on the exhaust and I'm tired of the smoke! We'll probably do the clutch and any other seals that make sense. The front suspension makes some noises but if you turn up the stereo it still feels like new. From what I read this car has the worst reputation of any SAAB built in the last 20 years. We've had very few problems compared to our other (non-SAAB) vehicles.
Now while I love my 900S and intend to keep/drive it for many miles and years to come, the shop gave me an '88 9000CSE with 145K miles on it for a loaner. It's trashed and not so fast anymore but it handles nicely. I've been thinking that an older 9000 Aero might be a neat project!
I've come to realize that high mileage SAABS can be a great deal (o.k. no surprise to most folks on this BB.)
Good Luck!
Jack
