This seal is simply a small seal which fits over the shift rod where it enters the transmission. It is pressed into the transmission and even with the Saab special tool is a major PITA to get out and a new one in. One of those jobs that looks easy, but takes all day.

They have been using the same one since way back when and they all seep a little. If it is not leaking badly...he probably just saw some seepage...I wouldn't worry much about it. I drove my 86 9000T for 100K miles with a seeping one (same transmission design) and it never got any worse.
