WAG - oil pressure relief valve Posted by MJM [Email] (#872) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MJM) on Thu, 13 Dec 2001 17:56:38 In Reply to: Re: dean...your suggestion?, matthew, Thu, 13 Dec 2001 16:51:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
the oil pressure relief valve in inside the front timing cover. Oil leaves the pump, goes past/through the valve, then into the filter before heading out to the rest of the engine.
The valve is fairly simple, basically it consists of a plastic cap and a spring. The spring compresses with increasing pressure. When pressure gets above a certain point (3.8 bar, IIRC), the cap opens up a bypass to return some oil to the pan. I suspect (with some evidence) that this cap deteriorates with age and disintigrates. Failure of this cap could result in low oil pressure. If I can get the parts in time I want to do mine on Monday.
This may be at least part of your problem.
Have you changed the oil to get rid of the additives? If not, do so. The weather is great now, finals are over. Take advantage of the opportunity. In fact, change it twice, with perhaps a couple hours EASY driving in between. Don't rev the engine hard at all.
The oil pump seems to be a series of disks and gears that fit over the crankshaft. Not a simple item.
I'd really recommend that you pick up Vol 2 (I think), Basic Engine for the 2.0 T, of the Saab shop manual. It'll be well worth the ten bucks as you try and troubleshoot this problem.
