the worn out balance sprockets dropped into the oilpan and got picked up by oilpump. If your shop did a good job they examined the pump and front cover+ reducing valve and determined that it was ok to reuse.
The nice thing though is that from the pump it goes straight into oilfilter so the wear on engine bearings is minimal.
The car I have sitting here right now I checked the bearings on and they look fine, but the balance gears and oilpump/front cover is total failure.
