Not all SET's came with the oil cooler. Mine does not have one. As an aside, my SHO had a power steering pump cooler.
No problem, check away. IIRC, the piece was actually laying on the "floor" of the threaded boss for the filter. Now that I say that, though, I'm not sure how visible that is during an oil change. I should have written down where I found it. Hmmm. I thought flow was in through the center and out through the ~10 holes on the perimeter. Do I have that backwards? Perhaps I need to break down and cut the filter open.
I'd bet money that it couldn't come through a gear-style oil pump, but I'm not sure what design Saab used. There doesn't seem to be a diagram of the pump in the manual, just a comment that it's on the crankshaft. I'm picturing something like a wankel, with an offset eccentric, but that's just a guess.
The filter was a Purolator PurOne.
thanks, Mike
