I am the current owner of both a 95 900SE V6 and a 96 LR Discovery (80K now, purchased used with 40K miles in '99). I looked at the Rover for the same reason I bought a Saab -- distinctive performance. Different performance, for sure, but like my kids, I love them both for their own uniqueness. Owners of both these vehicles relate their maintainence nightmares on this and the Rovers North board, but I have somehow avoided the big problems. The biggest problem I had was to replace the water pump at 70K miles. Like Saab, the Rover demands it's periodic maintenance, and it costs more for this than, say, an Explorer. (But if you have a Saab, you probably aren't interested in an Explorer). Look for a vehicle with complete service records that has had the maintenance done by the dealer or other qualified mechanic. The bulletin board at Roversnorth.com is a great source of information.
If I had to choose, I guess I would have to ask what I wanted out of a vehicle. If it was for mostly buzzing around town or on the highway, the SAAB has the fun-to-drive vote hands down. On the other hand, my Land Rover is the most solid vehicle I have ever owned, and there is nothing like a Rover when the road ends.
