Saab is more maint. free. Consider the Land Rover if you really need the off road capability. I own a 1989 Range Rover. Just overhauled engine at 150K...excessive blowby. Did work myself and had to have machine shop go .20 over on the cylinders and bought new pistons. Saab engine lowerend wouldn't show the same wear at that mileage. Trouble is that the power to weight ratio is low and the engine works hard. As a result, it wears hard. Layout of components is not the most logical or easy to maintain. Parts are harder to find and more expensive. There is a rust problem with frame pan areas. On my second side to cut and weld. Parts are obtained through dealers or mail order; the latter works well but there is a delay. Local dealers often handle Mercedes and Jags also...and charge 40% over mail order. Our Kansas City dealer cut the EFM fault lead because they could not figure out to reset the computer. They told me they had fixed the problem. I later determined that the light was a maintenence check light which resets by pulling and reconnecting the TPI cannon plug. I have a 1994 Suburban. Gets better gas mileage and has a more comfortable ride on and off road. But , the RR is better when the going is really tough, as in the Rockies on jeep trails. For bird dog hunting in the Kansas mud, the Sub is very suitable. I gave the RR to my son, who is well on his way toward an Elec Eng degree and loves to do car work. He is always having to work on it. But it sure looks nice.
