If your bearing are good, you can simply replace the Bosch brush/regulator pack which screws into the back of the alternator, under the black plastic cover. Generally non-bearing related alternator failure on the NG900 is from either worn out brushes or most commonly, burnt diodes in the voltage regulator.
You can buy the brush pack from thesaabsite.com for $77.00. You Do have to remove the alternator to get the back cover off, but its cheaper than a new one, if your bearings are good.
The burnt diodes are due to the NG900 drawing so much power from a weak spec battery, overheating the voltage regulator on the alternator. Try installing an Optima Orange top spiral cell battery. A revolutionary design, they show virtually no voltage drop and charge at 14.3 nearly all the time, even when ice cold or under very heavy load.
