You can get one with a small anico magnet for about $3.00 at most parts stores. For the one that I was speaking of, see the link, go to automotive, and the one for the VW & TDI fits the Saabs. $26.93 is expensive. AVlube did state that the VW unit fits the Saabs and I confirmed this with a trial fit before it was at home in the 97 Passat TDI Diesel.
It is made of stainless steel, so as to not impart any of the magnetic field to steel oil sumps. It has a large hex and you will need a 7/8" wrench. So it is not going to round off like the stock units do. It comes with a fiber washer that will last many oil changes. For the first useage, put some oil on the fiber washer. The first time used it will seem to compress as you torque it down, so that will feel strange to the hand.
The neo magnets are nickel plated to protect the magnet. The neo magnet it self is not very strong. If you have ever played with super magnets, you will know that they can develop velocities if let go that will break the nickel plating and the magnet it self. So don't play with the drain plug when you get it. For steel sumps, one has to be careful inserting and removing it. Don't let it snap to wrenches etc when changing the oil.
There will always be some magnetic residue on the plug with each oil change. It is reported that this will reduce after a few changes as iron wear particles in the engine are finally all taken out of circulation. When the plug shows a gross increase in captured magnetic material, you then know that a serious situation exists. So if one is suspticious of an internal problem, the plug can be pulled and the magnet inspected, which will cost 4 quarts of oil.
