Look at your replacement mast, to determine what must come out of the fender from the old mast, the replacement looks the same as the old mast. I seem to recall some sort of brass ring or snap/spring thingy on the last/bottom piece of metal on the old mast, like a bushing, that needs to be muscled out. Keep pulling with a strong, steady pull, like 20 seconds long, a few times, not small jerky motions.

Rest assured that whomever designed the mast probably drives a Saab, too, and has had the fun of replacing the mast!
