Most likely, your cable broke, it's been known to happen on these cars. The cable is about $40, and the labor is probably an hour or so.

They have to take the lower dash panel off and futz around with both ends of a new cable -- those of us who have done it ourselves don't enjoy the job.

I can't tell what you meant by you 'snapped the pedal back on', did the pad also come off the pedal?
