more winter tire hoo-haa -- kinda long Posted by saabgirlie [Email] (#155) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabgirlie) on Fri, 4 Oct 2002 13:10:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Does anyone know of a place where I can compare and read reviews on the Nokian Hakkapelitta Q, Hakkapelita 1, Gislaved Nord Frost, Blizzaks, and Michelin Alpins all in one place? I keep finding conflicting information on which handle better in ice, snow, cold, wet roads, dry roads, etc.
I'm trying to price tire and tire packages for my car and I need a tire that will work well during a minnesota suburban winter. I moved from downtown to the 'burbs over this last year and I'm not sure how the road plowing is going to be around here. Downtown they come and haul the snow away, so you only ever really have to worry about ice, salt and slush. The roads would dry quickly in the cold dry air. Here, I may have to worry about all ice, salt, slush and snow. Its more hilly around here too. Plus more novice teenaged drivers. Tires can't help me with that, really.
Anyways there seems to be a lot of difference in price.
The tire rack special is 4 Blizzaks on steel rims for $512.66 (shipping included).
The Saab dealer is selling 4 Gislaveds on steel rims for $793.43 (tax incl, mounting on to car extra). The same tires mounted on to 16" alloys for $958.50.
A local place that carries Nokians will mount 4 Hakkapelitta Q's on steel rims for $851 (tax + mounting on car included)
Ronal is offering Hakka 1s (aren't these studded, tho?) mounted on 16" alloys for $975, shipping incl.
I've seen the Michellin Alpins for about $127.00 each, but haven't found them in a package. So since just 4 tires are $508, I'd assume to put together tires and steel rims would be around $650 - 700, no?
With prices all over the board like this - its hard to compare by price alone, and with tires, the most expensive might not be the best for the road conditions I'm driving in.
So what are you minnesotans and other cold, snowy, icy winter drivers putting on your saabs this winter?
Thanks!
