Usually this scenario results in a MAJOR oil leak at the filter, but I'm sharing it for your own future use-- are you sure the filter gasket didn't stick/remain on the mount when you removed your old filter? If so, you've double gasketed when you put your new filter on. It will never seal. Telltale signs are a new filter that never seemed to tighten properly, and---a major leak. Also, either undertightening or overtightening a filter can cause a leak. Did you smear the gasket surface with a liberal coating of oil before you installed it? This will keep the gasket from possibly binding against the mounting surface and creating a void which can result in a leak.
