I've been having this problem for a month or so now. When I start my Saab
('94 900SE V6), 5 times out of 10 (recently), I will turn the key, and the
engine fires up after a couple cranks and then just dies after about one
whole second. Less recently (before the 'incident' described below), it was
happening 9 times out of 10. It always starts right up on the second time.
Sometimes when I start it, I'll hold the gas pedal down half way, and it
usually does start on the first time after some hesitation. The 'incident':
I was out shopping at the grocery store, and after 20 minutes inside (and
the car had been fully warmed up and had been driven for 30min beforehand) I
came out and went to start the car. I would turn the key and as soon as the
engine 'caught', I would let the key go and the car would immediately die
(didn't even run for a second, like it had been doing before). I tried
starting it 5 or 10 times, and was able to get it to start chugging for just
a second if I held down on the gas pedal, then it would die. This went on
for another 20minutes, trying to start the car... I looked under the hood to
see if there was an obvious problem- nothing. So I called for a ride from a
pay phone and I came back to the car to try her one more time. I floored the
gas pedal and turned the key, it started, and chugged horribly (with the gas
still floored). The tach was showing around 500rpm, and it was backfiring
(not quite, but making loud noises from the exhaust). It reminded me of how
a car runs when the timing if off (or how i remember a car with bad/no
timing belt running). Anyways- after about 30seconds of this painful
chugging, the engine shot to life (The RPMs shot up and stayed up for a
second after I had let my foot off the gas, then came down to its normal
idle, which is around 900rpm). The car drove home, and was fine after this
(And started back up without a problem once I got it home). Since then,
about 5/10 times it will start then stall after a second, but it will start.
Anyone have any Ideas about what it could be? The engine never, ever
hesitates once it has started, so that makes me think its not a fuel
problem. Could it be a computer problem? I hope not :-o! When we first got
our 9-3, it had a similar problem (if I remember- it was just turning over,
and not starting at all)- the Saab salesman told us that we had to let all
the lights turn off and the "check ok" message to come up before you
actually crank the engine (something to do with the fuel pump he said)- I've
tried this on the 900 with no better results.
Some more info that might be useful: its a 1994 NG900SE V6 2.5L with about
132,000miles on it... nothing has been modified/replaced with the engine...
it got a new timing belt about 4or5,000 miles ago. These are the only things
I can think of, if you want anymore info that might be useful mail me.
Thanks a million guys (and gals ;-)!

-Chris
