lifter tapping on start-up? Posted by MJM [Email] (#872) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MJM) on Fri, 30 May 2003 07:01:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Pretty much whenever I start the car after a long sit, like first time in the am, or after work, I hear a tapping for a minute or two. It sounds just like a sticking hydraulic lifter, the frequency changes with rpm. My '67 Mustang would to the same thing before it got the hot cam and Rhodes lifters (which tapped all the time anyway, but I digress). It goes away after a minute or two just like a switch was thrown: tap, tap, tap, then quiet. Sometimes it'll come back though before going away for good. Anyone else have this condition? I'd like to think that it's just a sticking lifter, but I perform regular oil changes and the car has had Mobil 1 for the last 55-60k miles. Hopefully it's not a sign of timing change tensioner destruction or something equally nasty that will force me to spend lots of money on the car.
thanks,
Mike
