I recon one of the lifters is drained of oil while the car is standing overnight and it takes a minute to fill up before the noise disappears. The cause of them draining more then they should be is normally high milage. The lifters are sliding up and down like a miniature piston in a miniature bore in the cylinder head, and are normaly lubricated and filled up from the side through some small narrow oil paths. In a high milage car the lifters will not sit tight in the bore and when the engine stops the lifters will drain oil more then usual. On start-up a drained lifter will be noisy until it fills up with oil.
If this is the condition, you would expect experimenting with different oils will be one way to prolong the lifter/head life. Changing to a thicker oil will certainly help I think to prolong cylinder head operation even if it does not remove the noise. A thinner oil will get to the lifter quicker though and will protect the lifter if it is starved of oil, but then if it is too thin the lifter may not be lubricated suffiently and the wear may be accelerated.
So I recon to be on the safe side use thicker oil in summer, like Mobil 1 15-50, and a convetional 10-40 in winter.
It will be interresting to know what other people think about this problem.
