I just replaced mine on a 95 900s last weekend. There are some really fine posts on the subject by DRW (search for them). Here is what I had to do.
got the alternator from eEuroparts.com $189 usd..Bosch rebuilt.
- disconnect the (-) lead from the battery
- removed the air intake crap. Filter box, mass sensor and plenum.
- taped over the throttle body (to protect from debris)
- removed tubular brace that runs from strut tops across firewall.
- replaced nuts on strut tops for whan car is jacked later.
- used 1/2 extention bar to compress and lock tensioner
- removed belt.
- used 1/2 extension to unlock and relax tensioner.
- remove upper idler pulley
- removed tensioner arm from upper alternator bracket (need 8mm allen wrench)
- now you can (easily) get to the upper alternator mound bolt. It is an 8mm allen bolt recessed in the upper alternator mount bracket. Remove the bolt.
- jack the front of the car and support by stands. Remove front RH wheel and access cover.
- now you can see the lower alternator mounting bolt. 8mm hex again. remove it.
- you will need to pry the alternator out. Then remove the two wires from it.
- remove the upper alternator mounting bracket (4 x 13mm bolts)
- I was able to get the alternator out the top between the firewall and the engine.
- now the fun part...swapping the pully off the old alternator and onto the new. I was lucky and my neighbor's daughter's boyfriend showed up just then and we went to his garage to do the job. I don't recommend this but it worked. We needed about a 24mm (not exatly sure) deep socket on a breaker bar to fit the nut way down in the pulley. Since we couldn't get to the 8mm allen recepticle on the end of the alternator shaft we jammed a screw driver in the alternator's fan. What the heck, it was bad anyway. Then we put the pulley on the new alternator and tightend the nut down. We held the pulley with a pipe wrench on the smooth part NOT WHERE THE BELT RIDES. We were VERY carfull and did not crush/mar the pully. The dealer alternator does have the pulley pre-installed but is $200 more.
- as they say in the Hanes manuals "Installation is the reverse of removal"
Tools
- 8mm allen key on 3/8 socket adaptor (must have!)
- 8mm box end ratchet to use with short 8mm key when removed from above holder - thanks DRW for that suggestion.
- 3/8 drive six point metric socket set. I used both a 10" and 3" extension.
- short length of pipe to use as extension on 3/8 ratchet handle.
- 1/4 drive six point metric socket set. I used a 3" extension
- Screwdrivers
- 1/2 socket extension at least 10" long (for the tensioner)
- a nail - to lock the tensioner
- (optional) neighbor's daughter's boyfriend to save your a#s on the pully swap :)
I also switched over to the "Short Belt" configuration at the same time. You may want to look that up on the board.
Total time was about 3.5 to 4 hrs.
Good Luck
Mike
