I believe that it was a collection of parts designed to strengthen the loosey-goosey front end--stop a lot of noise and wandering. Mostly a lot of noise. My '95 had her front end done (by the looks of the service printout that came with her) just about a month before she came to live with me. As usual, Saab will bring the cars out, find out what keeps breaking and issue fixes along the way without advertising the fact to the general populace. A while back, they had problems with the upper idler pulleys--they would give out after just a few thousand miles of service. This happened to me--after only about 40,000 miles. And what really made me mad was the fact that it took a brand new belt with it when it went!! But, Saab replaced the pulley AND the belt, gratis, after I called Norcross and burned somebody's ears off.
I don't know if, at this late date, you will be able to get Saab to install the updated plates, bushings and bearings. They will probably tell you to get lost due to the age of the car. But, stranger things have happened.......
