Get a torque wrench, use it for a while (maybe 500 cycles, even if you have to just keep "clicking" on the same bolt 500 times), THEN get it calibrated. Brand new torque wrenches usually have a work in period during which the readings will change dramatically, so calibrating before this is pointless. This is the case even for expensive torque wrenches. The Snap-On TQ series is actually the worst for it (once worn in, the TQ series is a great wrench, however). The one exception to this is the type 1 or "pointer" style wrench. These are not very user friendly though, as you have to basically lie on the ground to see what you're torquing the bolts to.
The calibration period for torque wrenches is 5000 cycles, which is quite a long time for a DIY'er just working on his own car, but can be just a couple months for a busy tire shop.
Try to get a good, name-brand wrench. There are some good no-name ones out there, but you have no idea which ones. Stay away from Westward (junk), and Norbar (proprietary, hard to get service).
