With the 2.3 NA, it's really important that the former owner(s) did oil changes regularly. Irregular oil changes cause top end sludging that will eventually cause the engine to seize.
You should ask if the front end has been updated as well. Early ('94 and '95) NGs had problems with the struts and strut bearings. Saab replaced this for free in 1995. You will know if your prospective Saab does not have the updated front end--sounds like the suspension is ready to fall out of the car and the front end is really loose.
Above all, with any NG900, the maintenance is critical. A poorly cared for NG will blow a hole in your wallet, your chequebook and your platinum AMEX quicker than you can blink.
There is no truth to the myth that the NG900 isn't as hardy as the C900--my '95 SEt has 223K on her, and she runs like a new Saab......
