Hey,

I pulled the rear rotors to find the e-brakes worn and in fact one of the friction surfaces fell off. Time to fix 'em.

Quick call to Saab dealer - $180 Cdn for a set! No friggin' way!
Quick call to West End automotive (Dundas street west). They don't list for a '95 900 SET but do list a '96 and up for $40. Quick call to Saab to verify that they're the same and I ordered them. 2 hours from the warehouse. Way cool.

They're part number ABS305 and listed for opel/vauxhall. They are made by Automotive Braking Systems ACI Limited in England. Cool.

So, quick disassembly of the rear brakes. Remove 2 19 mm bolts from the back of the caliper (don't scrimp - get a 19mm 1/2 inch drive socket and a breaker bar) and a bungy cord supports the caliper, hanging it from the rear door handle.

Remove the T30(?) screw and a quick slap with the hammer removes the rotor.

2 medium pry bars pulls the shoes apart enough to drop the adjuster (at the bottom) out. With this removed, the bottom spring removes easily.

Remove the hold-down springs (press on the other end of the pin and twirl the cap to remove) and the shoes can be wiggled apart and out.

A quick cleanup and lube (high heat resistant please) of the different parts (not the friction surfaces please) and then reassemble. Hold the one shoe in place with a c-clamp and hook up the top spring. Hook up the bottom spring. Use the 2 medium pry bars to spread the shoes enough to put the adjuster in place. Tap it with a small hammer to make it pop into its proper placement.

Use a clamp to hold the shoe against the backing plate. Press hard against the back of the hold-down spring pin and press the hold-down spring into place. If its a bit recalcitrant, a small socket on a screwdriver inserted through the adjuster hole in the hub can be used to press and rotate the hold-down spring cap.

Tap the shoes into proper placement with a small hammer and slide the rotor back on. I scraped off the thick/loose rust and painted the hub with black, rust-preventative paint. This is more important to me cause my winter wheels show more of the hub and the rust bugs the shit outa me. I don't think the hub part will heat up enough to burn off that paint. If it does, so what.

Remember to re-install the caliper (tighten up those 19 mm bolts real nice and tight) and ensure that they look like they're doing their job).

I haven't adjusted the e-brakes cause I wanted to use them a bit to allow them to "seat-in" before actually adjusting them. To do that, I'll have to remove the wheels and adjust through the larger hole in the hub. At least it's from the outside, not through the backing plate.

Remember to spray the bejeebers out of the e-brake cables with your favourite grease (spray white grease for me) so they work nicely. I also sprayed the rear trailing arm bushings cause I think they're squeaking when cold...

All in all, a fairly quick job on a nice Saturday afternoon. Now it's time to rake more leaves.

Cheers all,

Paul N.
