I cleared up a bit of hard shifting by cleaning the splines...there's an inspection port on the case, you can see the throwout and clutch thru there. I used some brake cleaner at the input shaft splines, and finished with some moly grease (on a stick). It wasn't scientific by any means, but effort went down and smoothness increased threefold. Much easier on cable, too.
They can gunk up quick. Lots of people noticed a light clutch right after a job and then it went heavy again within weeks. I can't believe this doesn't have something to do with a greased joint that's essentially open to the air.
My TO bearing has been noisy for 70K miles easy (semiretired car now). I did alot of city driving, so my verdict: it's just noisy. But, when it goes, I guess it would just hang the clutch up where it is.
