The book goes into a lot of detail the movie had to skip Posted by NCCaniac [Email] (#352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NCCaniac) on Tue, 26 Jan 2016 12:01:36 In Reply to: The Martian, No Snaab, Tue, 26 Jan 2016 05:30:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I had had friends recommend the book, so I read it before I saw the movie. While the movie is fairly faithful to the book, they had gloss over a lot of detail as to why the character did some of the things they showed in the movie. For example, cutting the top out of the rover for the longer trip was to fit in needed equipment that could not fit any other way.
I have heard several people talk about how some of the things in film seemed a bit "far-fetched", but the author of the book on which the film is based, and the film makers consulted a lot with NASA on extrapolating what could be done given the "what if the worst happens" scenarios and the NASA folks and the author are quite complementary of the book and the film. Yes, some things were changed in the film to make it more "visual", but that is typical of a book to movie adaptation.
The book is a relatively quick read and better than the film, in my opinion. The book goes into a lot more about the science and engineering involved in the various plot points.
