Bergman retrospective Posted by DE [Email] (#2598) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DE) on Tue, 18 Dec 2018 15:44:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Portland (Maine) Museum of Art is running a retrospective of Ingmar Bergman movies. I love them, and it doesn't get much more Swedish! Thus far I have seen The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, both from 1957, and IMHO masterpieces. I saw them both in college (I took a course in Bergman movies). Seeing them again I was transfixed all over. Next up is Persona, which I actually saw in a movie theater in college. Serious Scandinavian brooding and torment, with some redemption.
Haven't seen any Saabs, Seventh Seal is set in the Middle Ages, and in Wild Strawberries Dr. Borg takes a road trip in some enormous old car described as an "antique." They nearly avoid a collision with a wayward VW Bug which crashes, and the dysfunctional couple piloting the bug become passengers. Persona was made in '66 so we'll see what if any cars are in it.
Great actors and actresses - Max Von Sydow, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, etc.
In Swedish of course with subtitles, but these are so riveting you don't even notice. Probably not for everybody, but highly recommended if you get a chance to see them.
