I just saw Volume 1 last night as it came out on video and I am too cheap to go to the theatre. Anyway, I thought the violence was cartoonish, which could have been funny but somehow wasn't. For example, why have blood spewing out of wounds like a fountain? And why repeat the same joke three or four times ( or more, I lost count after a while, but not before I lost interest). QT has great technique - no argument there. But the storyline here was weak, no character development, nothing to make you care what happened to anyone (near as I could tell, they just about all died a violent death). Yes, the dialogue had it moments, but there was not much time for talking with all the kung fu fighting.
