I mean that in the most positive way i can. he exagerates the silliness of films and how we watch them. his chraracters usually have very little development, but that is how the pulp films that he imitates were. he stays true to the genre that he is imitating. do i consider his work groundbreaking? not really, but i like how he just loves what he is doing and you can just tell from watching that he is not doing it for money. but i agree with you, it is a certain flavr that I like and other may not.
