Mothers is fantastic at getting all the little garbage off. For example -- on your rims will be small black specs (likely tar) that seems tough to get off with soap and water, but Mothers takes it right off. All those black exhuast deposits came right off. I let it glaze on the wheel and the exhaust tip and then buff it off with fast motions - I have found that to bring out the best shine.
There maybe others out there that work as well. I have been using Mothers since 1990 when I had a repo chevy beretta GTU with alloy rims. At that time I tried a few others, but Mothers was a winner and when something isn't broke I don't fix it.
Another product to think about that has gotten excellent reviews is P21S Multi-surface Finish Restorer (See Link). I have heard great stuff about this porduct and if I had something that was really nasty and Mother's didn't work I would probably get this and try it out. P21S is what Harley Motorcycles rebrands and sells to polish the chrome on your Harley -- same goes for the P21S Carnuba wax. Good stuff.
Hope that helps.
