Hydroplaning---front vs rear

While rear skid spins are fairly easy to initiate on snow/ice, I have always believed that rain hydroplaning was primarily a front wheel/tire issue. My reasoning is that the front tires will clear the path for the rears, much like following a truck in a rainstorm to track in some unflooded pavement. Therefore, I have been of the "good tread in front school" to avoid front end surfing on the highway.
Since I'm never cornering anywhere close to the limit on wet pavement, I have been more concerned about straight line braking and loss of front wheel contact, which scares the hell out of me. I guess it doesn't take much of a swerve angle to get the rear to come around with bad tires in the rain, and maybe I've been falsely counting on ABS to keep me straight.
It's probably moot anyway, because I have always been fussy about having decent tread all the way around as the cheapest insurance you can buy. Nothing like studded Hakka's on hard pack and ice. Finally took them off last Satuday, so we'll get snow this weekend!
