These JDPowers studies are statistical nightmares. Several things can skew the results.
If a manufacturer sells simple cars, for example, 400,000 Toyota Echos (which basically are four seats, a powertrain, and a radio), then the number of 'possible' problems per car is very low. Spread that over high volume, and combine with other high volume cars in the brand, and the count per 100 comes in very low.
Then take a very complicated car like the new 9-3 with a turbocharged engine, sophisticated engine management, power everything, loads of do-dads, and the 'possible' problems per car is quite high. There are simply more things that can go wrong. Spread that over very low volume, in a low volume brand, and the count per 100 comes in very high. If Saab sells 20,000 9-3s and 100 are total lemons, then you can easily see the numbers skew. A few hundred lemon Echos won't even register.
I've had Saabs since 1979, and my 9-5, which I bought used, is definitely the most reliable. For the first time I can recall, there is "nothing to do" to the car. When I had my 900s and 9000, there was always a list.
