It shouldn't have an effect as the sampling is supposedly random among new car owners by make/model. The sample sizes are all statistically valid. That's how it was historically and how J.D. Power (he's a real person, I've met him) started the company. However, J.D. is no longer running the place (retired and living well, last I heard) and the brand is licensed out for everything other than cars.
However, I spent 13 years in market research--3 of it automotive--and it's not all that hard to bias results in a variety of ways.
I suspect JDP stats are OK, but you still need to look at other data, too. It's the old thing: Lies, damn lies, and statistics.
