"Liability trial lawyers are scum, they are interfering with commerce in this country to benefit themselves."
Makes no sense to me.
Isn't commerce based upon each party seeking to benefit him/her self within the bounds of the law? Free market principles are at work in the legal representation business the same way they are in the rest of commerce. Last I checked, the free market was a basically good idea.
Plaintiffs' lawyers are just another part of commerce; they take calculated risks in accepting contingency clients who would not otherwise be able to fund or push suits against large, organized entities. If they didn't confront companies for shoddy products, who would? Market forces would otherwise dictate that such confrontation would be a waste of time.
The fact that plaintiffs' lawyers are are legal professionals does not obligate them to base their renumeration on some public notion of economic justice. That would make them socialists. They're going to maximize profit on the basis of market forces, just like the rest of us.
Now if you just wanted to call personal injury lawyers unseemly, that's a different issue!
