My cousin and brother-in-law both have iPods and are very pleased with them. They are also both Mac users. Make sure the new iPod can double as a hard drive. I know my brother-in-law's model which is older does not have this support. I found the sound to be as good as anything else I've tried. Although I am primarily a Mac user, my MP3 collection is on my WinXP machine and my wife gave me a 20GB Rio Riot for our last anniversary (nice wife!). It's worked well enough, but the interface is not good enough that I'd reccomend it to you. If I was looking, I'd take a very close look at the Nomad Jukebox Zen. My favorite and most reliable MP3 player to date has been my Nomad IIc and I like the feature set of the Zen very much.
That said, I'm hoping that there'll be some very small players released soon that use the SanDisk 4GB CompactFlash memory cards. I'm pretty picky about my music and so my music library is only about 5GB in all which is very much on the smallish side compared to most of my friends who use MP3. I have one friend who has a library of over 100Gb's but he can't really tell me what is in it... silly.
