The batteries can be replaced (in the older iPods, not the new ones...yet), but the warranty will be voided (but as far as I know Apple has a pretty good track record of taking care of battry problems during warranty period). Initially I had some battery run down issues while the iPod was "sleeping", but the latest version of firmware has fixed this problem for me. As for how long the battery will last, I have no idea, I've only had the iPod for about 5 months....
