As prom week reveals a slew of stretched HUMMER H2s, Expeditions and Avalanches (with a hot tub in back yet, youth is wasted on the young), I realize that Americans just don't get it.
My premise is that SUV's are not justifiable as single occupant commuter cars, the majority use of SUV's as they are bought.
If tax credits are used to influence public ploicy, instead of adopting a $1 a gallon tax as proposed in a recent issue of Automobile Magazine, why not offer a tax credit to buyers of new four cylinder cars? Assume 4 cylinders get 30 mpgs and 8 cylinders get half that; every 4 cylinder that gets 30 mpg gets resold and stays in the system longer than an 8 cylinder car, thus decreasing our dependence on foreign oil.
Any body in favor of that? No legislation that is punitive to those stupid enough to want an SUV, just encouragement to those who have yet to realize that a turbo fuor could be better. How big should the tax credit be?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
