I did this. I'm still independent after 3 years. :)
My only regret is that, since I'm a social person, I don't really get all that "co-worker comraderie". However, I have made some great friends on contracts. I also have joined a lot of "groups" so as to network, network, network and just to see people in my field of work. I miss that most. I do most of my work from home, if the contract allows, and rarely work on site, except for meetings and such. My husband, who is also my biz partner, works on site mostly, so he really doesn't have this issue as much as I do.
Being canadian, you won't have to worry about buying health insurance, which is crazy expensive here.
Oh and talk to a lawyer and have them make you a generic contract. Lawyers are also handing for looking over contracts to see if they are fair.
Also make sure you do all your tax stuff on time, I recomend getting an accountant. :) Sure most tax junk you can do yourself, but it takes time and its one less thing to worry about. Its fun to buy stuff with pre-tax dollars!
Other than that, I enjoy being a contractor, the rates are higher generally and you get a lot of variety. Since your contract, you won't be asked to do any stuff that wasn't in your job description and office politics will not involve you. :)
bon chance!
