Hi Brad:
Congrats on your opportunity. I toyed with the idea a while ago and in the end, given personal and family circumstances, decided to stay employed. However, here are things to consider or at least I have considered given that my contracts/projects are management consulting in nature:
- Health benefits. Depending on the level/type of coverage, this could work up to about $200/month or more. Not sure how much for OHIP (?)
- Liability insurance. Need to get quote.
- Time off for training/vacation. Need to factor this in but at your own cost. Ongoing training is a necessity especially when you are on your own. Vacation is not a necessity but you get the picture.
- Marketing. Not sure about the duration of the contracts you do but need to remember to do this to keep the pipeline going.
Of course, there are several benefits as well especially in terms of flexibility and taxes. Might be a good idea to join a professional association in your field to take advantage of their group benefits. I am on the local executive board of an international consulting association which has many independent practicioners. The above are the things we constantly hear them talk about.
In any case, good luck with your decision.
Cheers,
Simon
