OT: Apple Powerbook G4 - First Impressions

I recently purchased a 15" Apple Powerbook with the SuperDrive (stock configuration). Overall, I am very pleased; everything is as expected. I owned three other Macs in the past and have been using Windoze machines for the past four years. It was very easy to begin using the system and understand how everything works. Very intuitive, for the most part.
On the other hand, it does not seem to be as fast as I had expected. Running on a 1Ghz G4 processor, this laptop does not seem much faster than my IBM T22 (~800Mhz PIII). Everyone raved about how fast this computer is, but it seems to "studder" quite a bit when doing certain things. The Aqua effects are sometimes choppy, and the system freezes momentarily when attempting to multitask. The harddrive makes a loud click-and-crunch about every 10-25 seconds and the computer locks up for a moment (this HD noise is much different than when simply opening a program or reading a file).
Has anyone else had similar problems with this laptop? It seems wonderful, but it makes me nervous that it is showing signs of problems when it is only a week old...
